The Champion isn't the small 20-inch bop kit some listings describe. German Wikipedia dates it to 1969 and the Super Champion to 1970, and Sonor's 1975 centenary catalog shows the line in full. The Champion five had a 22-inch bass drum, 12 and 13-inch toms, a 16-inch floor tom and the D454 steel snare. The Champion six went to a 24-inch bass drum with two floor toms, and the Super Champion was a double bass set. The shells were heat-molded without reinforcement rings, and the hardware had Champion-named pedals, stands and a double tom holder. German Wikipedia also says the 1973 Champion was the first Sonor set offered in rosewood with vertically cut veneer. In 1981, it says, the Champion name passed to a kit built in Taiwan, and a 1982 UK price list shows a Champion outfit in metallic finishes. That split is the main thing to sort out. Ask where the kit was made and when, then judge it like any 1970s set, by its edges, its holes and its hardware.

How to date one
Sonor's 1975 catalog shows the Champion with long rectangular lugs rather than teardrops. German Wikipedia says the Champion name moved to a Taiwan-built kit in 1981, so a German-made Champion predates that.
What to check before you buy
Champions were played hard, so look for extra holes in the bass drum and missing floor tom legs or spurs. Sets get completed with drums from other Sonor lines, which shows as a different lug or badge.
01Made where: Ask the seller for a close photo of the badge and any labels inside the shells. Write down what it says about where it was made, since later Champions came from Taiwan.
02Lug style: Compare the lugs on every drum in the photos. They should all match, and a different lug style means a drum from another kit.
03Matching set: Check that the finish and badge agree on every drum in the photos. Even fading across the set means the drums lived together.
04Bass drum holes: Ask for a photo of the bass drum shell around the tom holder. One clean holder plate and no filled holes is what you want.
05Legs and spurs: Count the floor tom legs and bass drum spurs in the photos. Each should have its clamp, and the tips should be there.
06Bearing edges: Ask for a photo of each edge with the heads off. The edges should be smooth and unchipped all the way round.
07Packing: Ask the seller to box each drum separately with heads on and stands packed apart. Local pickup is the safer choice for a five-piece.

Which one to buy
§ Oct 12, 2026
We'd buy the rosewood Champion from heritagedrums at $2,336 delivered, inside the $2,275–3,000 delivered band from a 100% seller, though it's three drums with no 12-inch tom. There are at least 7 Champions for sale, so that band is a thin read. The Champion name moved to a Taiwan-built kit in 1981, so ask where each kit was made, and ask for badge, inside-shell and bearing-edge photos. Two are acrylic Acryl Champions, and acrylic cracks around the lugs if it's knocked, so ask for close photos there. Skip the two zero-feedback listings, one of them titled modified.

Vintage Sonor Champion Drum Kit 1975 All Original Beech Shells
A rosewood Champion from a 100% drum dealer at $2,336 delivered, inside the band. It's three drums, 22/13/16, so it's missing the Champion five's 12-inch tom and needs your own snare and stands.
A five-piece in metallic orange, one of the Champion's catalog finishes, titled with hardware and graded very good by a drum shop. It's the one to buy if you want to set up and play, at $2,350 delivered.
