3-ply drums
Three thin plies of wood, with solid maple reinforcing rings glued inside each edge. Ludwig built its Downbeat, Super Classic and Hollywood shells from mahogany and poplar this way, and Slingerland used the same recipe for its Radio King kits, the Modern Solo and its 1970s Niles kits. The rings give the head a firm edge to sit on, so look at both edges of every shell for a ring that's loose, cracked or missing.
