Gretsch · Name Band snare · 1954–1977
This is the wood snare that came with Gretsch outfits for most of the round badge years. The 1954 catalog calls the 14 x 5½ 4157 the Broadkaster New Narrow model and says Shelly Manne and Louie Bellson used it. By 1958 it was the Name Band model, with 16-strand Responso snares and the Micro-Sensitive strainer, and it was the outfit snare on the Bop and Name Band sets. The 4157 meant Gretsch pearl, and the 4155 was the same drum in mahogany or lacquer. The 1950s catalogs describe 3-ply shells, and from 1961 Gretsch called them 6-ply. By 1971 the 4157 had the Lightning throw-off and wide 42-strand snares, and a 4157W came in polished walnut. The 4103 is its budget relative. It's the Renown, a 14 x 5½ with a plain throw-off that Gretsch aimed at schools and part-time players, and 4103 was the pearl version. Sellers mix the two up, so look at the strainer. A Micro-Sensitive or Lightning throw-off points to a Name Band, and a simple lever throw-off usually means a Renown.

Read the badge first. A round badge means 1971 or earlier and an octagonal one the 1970s. A natural 3-ply interior fits the 1950s and a silver-painted 6-ply one the 1960s. The strainer helps too. The 1950s and 1961 catalogs show the Micro-Sensitive strainer, and the 1971 catalog the Lightning throw-off.
Strainers get swapped, so a Renown can turn up with a Name Band throw-off or the other way round. Re-wrapped shells, cracked plies and worn snare beds are the other common problems.
Buying guide
We'd buy a 1960s round badge 4157, the Name Band snare, like the Blue Sparkle one at $497 delivered from a 100% seller, right at the bottom of the $500–1,550 delivered band. There are at least 18 for sale, and the band runs wide because US sellers ask about $460–1,175 delivered for 1960s drums while Japan dealers ask $1,350–2,030. Read the badge and the inside of the shell, since a round badge means 1971 or earlier and a natural 3-ply interior the 1950s, and ask for photos of the strainer, because strainers get swapped between Renown and Name Band drums. A drum titled Dixieland isn't a Name Band or Renown model, so don't pay Name Band money for one; the two here ask $301–344 delivered. Skip the $847 Champagne Sparkle from a zero-feedback seller unless the account checks out.

The lowest delivered snare here at $301, a no-bid auction for an early-style 1950s Blue Sparkle round badge 14x5.5 titled Dixieland, not a Name Band model. We'd stop at about $344 delivered, what the green Dixieland asks on Buy It Now.
