Gretsch · Name Band · 1954–1971
Gretsch sold the Name Band as a complete, compact outfit for professional work, and it stayed in the catalog for more than twenty years. In 1954 the Broadkaster Name Band came with a 22 x 14 bass drum, a 13 x 9 tom, a 16 x 16 floor tom and a 14 x 6½ snare, and Max Roach's photo headed the page in the 1954 and 1958 catalogs. By 1958 the snare was the 14 x 5½ 4157, with a 20-inch bass offered as an option, and Cadillac Green Nitron sets came only with gold-plated hardware. The 1961 catalog pitches it for big band, floor shows and combo work, and that's the year the shells are described as 6-ply. By the mid-1960s the 20-inch bass had become standard and a 4160 chrome metal snare came with it, which is how the 1971 catalog still sells it. A Name Band II with a 22-inch bass followed in the 1970s. So a 22-inch bass drum doesn't mean a kit has been mixed. Match the badges, interiors and wrap across the drums instead, and decide whether you want the earlier 3-ply shells or the later 6-ply ones.

Gretsch says fires destroyed its serial records, so date one by its parts. The round badge ran until 1971 and the octagonal badge took over in 1972. A natural 3-ply interior fits the 1950s and a silver-painted 6-ply interior the later years. The catalog snare is a clue too. The 1958 and 1961 sets came with the 4157 wood snare, and the mid-1960s and 1971 sets with the 4160 chrome metal snare.
Four-drum outfits get split up, so a Name Band for sale is often three of the original drums plus a stranger. Bass drums pick up extra holes from later tom holders and cymbal mounts.
Buying guide
Only one round badge kit in Name Band sizes is for sale, a 60s 3-piece 20/13/16 at $2,875 delivered, so there's no market read yet. It isn't titled Name Band, but a 20-inch bass with 13- and 16-inch toms is the mid-1960s Name Band layout. Gretsch says fires destroyed its serial records, so date it by parts and ask for photos inside each shell, where a silver-painted 6-ply interior fits the 1960s. Ask for the top of the bass drum too, since later tom holders leave extra holes, and ask about a snare, because Name Band outfits were sold as four drums.
