Ludwig · Black Beauty · 1920s; revived 1977–present
Ludwig's 1977 flyer tells the origin story. At the 1924 premiere of Rhapsody in Blue, George Marsh played a black Ludwig & Ludwig snare in Paul Whiteman's band, and Whiteman christened it a Black Beauty. In the 1928 catalog, Ludwig & Ludwig's De Luxe all-metal snare has a black nickel shell hand-engraved in a floral pattern, gold-colored hardware, and sizes from 4 x 14 to 6.5 x 15. The gold Triumphal in the same catalog is a different drum, plated in real gold. Ludwig revived the name in 1977 with a one-piece brass shell drawn from a single sheet, where the original had used a two-piece shell. It came in Supra-Phonic and Super Sensitive versions, and each drum was numbered. Under Selmer the shells switched to bronze in 1981 to save on materials, and the 1994 catalog lists brass again. Today's USA Black Beauty is a hydroformed brass shell in black nickel. Most listings you'll see are 1977 or later, and a 1920s engraved drum is a much rarer thing. Ask for clear photos of the badge, the strainer and the inside of the shell, and match them to the right era.
Inside the shellBlack Beauty
A 1920s drum is a Ludwig & Ludwig with separate-tension rods and no Supra-Phonic style casings. The 1977 flyer says each revived drum was numbered, and those drums carry blue and olive badges; Vintage Drum Guide shows the rounded-corner blue and olive badge on a late-1970s Black Beauty. Shells switched from brass to bronze in 1981, and the 1994 catalog lists brass again.
Black nickel wears through at the edges and around the hardware, and pitting under it is common. Strainers and hoops get swapped over the years.
Buying guide
Most Black Beautys for sale are the current USA drum, so we'd buy a used one, like the 5x14 at $650 delivered from a 99.8% dealer, about $265 under the $915 a new tube-lug LB416T asks. There are at least 53 for sale, and the $850–1,100 delivered band is mostly new dealer stock. Black nickel wears through at the edges and around the hardware, so look closely at those spots in the photos and ask about pitting under the finish. Vintage ones are scarce and no 1920s engraved Ludwig & Ludwig drum is listed right now, but the 1977 revival drums carry blue and olive badges and bronze shells ran from 1981 until about 1994, so ask for the badge and a photo inside the shell before paying a vintage premium. Skip the zero-feedback hammered drum, the 90% seller's Monroe drum and the $2,547 bronze drum from Japan, about 2.7 times the median.
$649.99delivered
The lowest delivered Black Beauty here at $650 with free shipping, a used 5x14 of the current USA drum from a dealer. That's about $265 under a new one, so ask for photos of the black nickel at the edges and around the lugs, where it wears through.
Ludwig Black Beauty 5"x14" Snare Drum
$699.00delivered
A used current 5x14 with 8 lugs at $699 delivered from a 99.8% dealer, well under the $915 new ones ask here. Check the photos for wear through the black nickel and ask what the dealer's return window is.
Ludwig Black Beauty Snare Drum - 5 x 14 inch - Black Nickel with 8-Lugs
$1,370.51est. delivered
Titled 70s-80s brass with a blue and olive badge in the photo, so it may be an early revival drum from before the 1981 switch to bronze. It's a UK auction with no bids, and we'd stop at about $1,400 delivered, since an 80s drum from Canada asks $1,485 and a new one $915.
