Ludwig · Acrolite · 1962–1994
Ludwig announced the Acrolite in 1962 as the finest in student line instruments, a 5 x 14 snare with the same beaded shell shape as its pro metal snares, eight tension casings and hoops made of the same new lightweight alloy. Ludwig's own site dates it to 1963, the year it reached the full catalog alongside the Supra-Phonic. It also came in a student kit with a stand, sticks, a method book and a case. Ludwig says it quickly caught on with pros who wanted a dry, cracking snare sound, and Al Jackson Jr.'s Hi Records kit, now in the Stax Museum, is a Rogers set with an Acrolite snare. The early shells had a soft satin finish. Ludwig added a powder coat in the mid-1980s, and the black powder-coated drums in the 1993–94 catalog are what collectors call the Blackrolite. There was also a 6.5 x 14, ten-lug Acrolite made for New York City schools, which Ludwig's current Acro Series copies. With no chrome to hide under, the shell's condition shows plainly in photos. Pick one with a clean shell, its original hoops and a strainer that works.
Inside the shellAcrolite
Ludwig announced the Acrolite in its Spring 1962 Ludwig Drummer magazine and a 1962 flyer, and it was new in the 1963–64 catalog. Early drums have hoops of the same Acrolite metal as the shell. A powder-coated shell points to the mid-1980s or later, and a black powder coat with a black and white badge is the 1990s Blackrolite. Badge style dates it the same way as other Ludwigs, keystone through 1969 and blue and olive after.
The soft aluminum shell dents and scratches, and the damage stays visible. Ludwig sold it as a student drum, so many lived hard lives, and worn strainers, replaced hoops and missing parts are common.
Buying guide
We'd buy a 1970s or early-80s blue and olive badge Acrolite that comes with a case and stand, like the 1980 LM404 at $378 delivered from a 100% seller, inside the $340–725 delivered band. There are at least 89 for sale, and most US drums ask $240–500 delivered, while Japan shops ask $910–1,570 for similar drums, which stretches the band. The aluminum shell dents and scratches easily and Ludwig sold it as a student drum, so look for dents in the photos and ask whether the strainer works and the hoops are original. Black Galaxy finishes are 1980s-90s drums, and a keystone badge means 1969 or earlier, which is what collectors pay more for. Skip the $1,570 1964 from Japan, about 3.9 times the median, when a 1968 keystone drum asks $490 delivered here.

The lowest delivered Acrolite here at $240, a 5x14 with the blue and olive badge in the photo, so 1969 or later. The title makes no condition claim, so ask for photos all around the shell for dents and whether the strainer works.
