Pearl · Pearl GLX drum set · 1984–1988
GLX was the top of Pearl's 1984 Professional Series, a step above the MLX. The 1984 catalog calls the GLX-9500 and 9300 the Super Pro series: all-maple shells, 2.3mm rolled-steel Super Hoops, the redesigned TH-95 tom holder and Pearl's new Super Gripper lug. That lug is the GLX's signature. It has no spring inside, a plastic sleeve in the nut grips the tension rod so the drum stays in tune, and to change a head you loosen the rods a few turns and snap the lugs open, with no rods to chase across the floor. The 9500 Deep-Force outfits had toms and bass drums 2 inches deeper, the 9300 kept conventional depths, and every outfit came with the B-714DX, a 6.5 x 14 brass snare with the same lugs. By 1987 the line was called Prestige Artist 9500, in lacquers including Piano Black, Antique Ivory and Sequoia Red. Pearl dates the series to 1984, Wikipedia gives the GLX's run as 1985 to 1988, and the maple CZX followed in 1989. On a used GLX the lugs matter most. Ask for a short video of a few Super Grippers opening and closing, and make sure every drum has its full set.

Super Gripper lugs and the GLX name tie a kit to 1984–1988. In the 1984 catalog, outfit codes with a D (GLX-22D-50) are the 9500 Deep-Force depths and codes without one (GLX-22-50) the 9300. The 1984 lacquers were Wine Red, Walnut, Natural Maple and Black. The Prestige Artist 9500 name and finishes like Piano Black, Antique Ivory and Sequoia Red appear in the 1987 catalog.
A Super Gripper that won't snap shut or doesn't hold its rod needs parts, so every lug counts. The lacquer chips and checks like any 1980s finish, and tom holders go missing.
