Sonor's 1983 catalog called the Phonic Plus bass drums a brand new line of deeper shells, and it explained the name plainly. Plus, the catalog said, meant more of everything. The shells were the same 9-ply beech as the Phonic, pressed in an oil-heated press so they needed no reinforcing rings, with 45-degree edges. What changed was the depth. The toms were square, from 10 x 10 to 14 x 14, the floor toms ran from 15 x 17 to 18 x 19, and the bass drums were 22 or 24 inches across and 18 deep. Sonor pitched them at the drummer who demands the most sound and volume. Sonor offered just two finishes, gloss white and red mahogany, with deep matching snares in wood or ferro-manganese steel. Older listings describe it as a fusion kit with 10, 12 and 14-inch toms on Sonor APM mounts, which the catalog doesn't support. Check the depths against the catalog sizes, and expect a white or mahogany set.

Phonic Plus sizes give it away. The toms are as deep as they are wide (10 x 10 to 14 x 14) and the bass drums are 18 inches deep, where the standard Phonic used 14-inch-deep bass drums.
These kits were often played hard and redrilled for other mounts. The clip-on mufflers, floor tom legs and bass drum spurs are the parts most often missing.
