Rogers · Dyna-Sonic · Early 1960s–1980s
The Dyna-Sonic is the drum that made Rogers' name with snare players. It arrived in the early 1960s, designed with Buddy Rich's sound in mind, and Rich played one for years. It holds the wires in a rigid frame that rides the bottom head. One screw sets the tension on the wires and the throw-off sets how firmly the frame meets the head, so the wires can sit tight without choking it, over a snare bed Wikipedia puts at about 4/1000 inch deep. The first catalog page, in 1962, showed pearl-covered wood shells. Most Dyna-Sonics are chrome-plated brass with ten lugs, and the wood ones are the rarer find. Neil Peart played a 5 x 14 on 2112 and All the World's a Stage. Rogers kept refining it, with a die-cast frame in 1976, and still sold it in the 1980s. Vintage Drum Guide says many owners pulled the frame out when they couldn't get it to sound right, so make sure the frame, rail and throw-off are all there and original.
Inside the shellDyna-Sonic
Many Dyna-Sonics carry an oval Dyna-Sonic badge with a serial number, and Vintage Drum Guide shows versions with and without one. The script Rogers logo dates it like other Rogers drums. The regular Ohio script fits 1961–1968/69, a flatter Fullerton script fits 1969/70–1975, and the square Big R badge fits 1976 on. The 1976–77 catalog's version has a die-cast snare frame and a double-trench shell.
The floating frame gets removed or lost, and owners who never set one up properly often decide the drum won't tune. Chrome on the brass shell can pit and flake, and reproduction rails and throw-offs have been sold since 2017.
Buying guide
We'd buy a chrome-over-brass Dyna-Sonic from a US seller, where the 1960s and 1970s brass drums ask about $325–730 delivered, like the 5x14 titled 60s 7-line at $426. There are at least 65 for sale and most ask $600–1,175 delivered, because the Japanese dealers holding many of them add $150–250 shipping. On any of them, ask for a photo of the snare side showing the floating frame, rail and clock-face throw-off, since many owners pulled the frame out and reproduction rails have been sold since 2017. Skip the $1,497 delivered drum from a seller eBay didn't show, and treat the 1968 Blue Onyx wood drum at $3,225 as a collector's piece priced far above the rest.
