The SuperTen was Rogers' snare for the louder 1970s. It first shows up in the 1973–74 catalog, built in Fullerton, with ten lugs for even tuning and a solid steel shell, where the Dyna-Sonic used brass. Rogers aimed it at the loud drummer and at players after a fat, wet, funky snare sound. Steve Ettleson, the featured drummer in the rock musical Hair, said in the ad that it made conventional snare drums out of date. It uses ordinary snare wires across carefully cut beds, with no floating frame, and the 1976–77 catalog describes a double-trenched steel shell for power and volume. It came in 5 x 14 and 6.5 x 14, and by 1983 Rogers also offered it with a 10-ply maple shell. With no frame to lose, buying one comes down to the chrome, the lugs and whether the strainer holds. If a listing calls the shell brass, hold a magnet to it, since steel will pull and brass won't.

How to date one
The SuperTen first appears in the 1973–74 catalog as part 45-9485 and is still listed in 1983. Vintage Drum Guide shows two versions of its SuperTen badge, and drums from 1976 on carry the square Big R badge.
What to check before you buy
Chrome on the steel shell can pit, and on a steel drum that can turn to rust under the plating. Strainers wear, and listings sometimes call the shell brass.
01Shell metal: Ask the seller to hold a magnet to the shell if the listing says brass. A SuperTen is steel, so the magnet should stick.
02Chrome: Check the shell in close photos for pitting, flaking or rust spots. Light wear is normal, and rust under the plating is hard to fix.
03Badge: Look for the SuperTen badge or the square Big R badge in the photos. The Big R means 1976 or later.
04Lugs: Count the lugs in the photos. There should be ten matching lugs with no cracked castings or stripped rods.
05Strainer: Ask the seller whether the strainer throws off and holds tension. It should engage firmly and release the snares fully.
06Snare beds: On arrival, take off the bottom head and look at the bearing edge where the wires cross. It should be smooth and even, with no dents in the trenched shell.
07Packing: Ask the seller to double-box the drum. A loose snare can crack a lug or bend a hoop in transit.

We'd buy the 1970s Big R SuperTen at $319 delivered with Best Offer, a 10-lug chrome steel drum under the $350–440 delivered band. We found only four for sale, so that band is a thin read. With no floating frame, a SuperTen comes down to the chrome, the lugs and the strainer, so ask for close photos of the plating for pitting or rust and a short clip of the throw-off holding. The 70s auction at $107 delivered will climb over its last five days, and we'd stop around $320 delivered, the price of the Big R drum. The 1980 drum titled 12-lug SuperTen is odd for a model named for its ten lugs, so ask for badge and shell photos before paying for rare.

Rogers Super Ten Snare Drum 10 Lug Chrome Steel 1970s Big R Period
A 70s 10-lug steel 5x14 titled with the script badge, which dates it before the Big R badge arrived in 1976. It's about $20 over the band with free shipping, a fair premium for an earlier drum.
