Ludwig · Hollywood · 1960–1975
Ludwig introduced the Hollywood in its 1960 catalog as the latest in twin tom tom design, aimed at the modern jazz drummer. It had a 22-inch bass drum, a 16 x 16 floor tom and two 12 x 8 toms on a new retracting double holder. By 1967 the catalog was pitching it to the rock drummer, and the toms had become a 12 and a 13 on an all-angle holder, which is the Hollywood most people picture. Ringo Starr moved to a maple-finish Hollywood in September 1968 after four years on his Super Classic. The outfit stayed in the catalog through 1975, built on the same 3-ply mahogany and poplar shells as the Super Classic until Ludwig went to 6-ply around 1976. A Hollywood is a Super Classic plus one tom, so the toms are where a kit gets assembled from parts. Two 12s fit an early kit and a 12 and 13 fit a later one, and all four drums should share a badge style, serial range and finish. Look for the original double tom holder and a bass drum with no extra holes.
Inside the shellHollywood
Read the badges first. Keystone badges without a serial number fit about 1960 to late 1963, serial-numbered keystones run through 1969, and the blue and olive badge followed in 1969. The tom sizes help too, since the first Hollywood had two 12-inch toms and the 12 and 13 pairing shows in the catalog by 1967. Vintage Drum Guide's shell table has white painted interiors on most 1961–1967 shells and clear interiors from 1968.
With four drums, a stray tom from another kit is the usual problem, along with a bass drum drilled for later tom and cymbal mounts. Missing or replaced double tom holders are common.
Buying guide
We'd buy the 1970s Red Sparkle 4-piece at $1,850 delivered, titled with the 12/13/16/22 Hollywood sizes and 3-ply shells, from a 100% seller at the bottom of the $1,850–2,350 delivered band. There are at least 4 for sale, so the band is a thin read, but all four ask between $1,850 and $2,500 delivered. With four drums, a stray tom from another kit is the usual problem, so ask for every badge, photos inside each shell and the top of the bass drum around the double tom holder, where extra holes show later mounts. The cheapest kit's price includes $450 freight and its title gives no year or sizes, so ask what's in the box. We'd pass on the $2,500 Sky Blue Pearl set, the top ask here, unless the seller's 97.8% feedback reads clean.

The lowest delivered Hollywood here at $1,850, a gold sparkle kit whose photo shows a bass drum, three toms and a snare. $450 of the price is freight and the title gives no year or sizes, so ask for both and for the badges.
