Ludwig · Downbeat · 1960–1971
In May 1963 Ringo Starr took delivery of a small Ludwig kit in Black Oyster Pearl from Drum City in London, and he picked the brand because he liked that finish. The kit was a Downbeat, Ludwig's compact outfit for drummers playing one-nighters, with a 20-inch bass drum, a 12-inch tom and a 14-inch floor tom. A second Downbeat in the same pearl is the kit 73 million people watched on The Ed Sullivan Show in February 1964. Ludwig first showed the Downbeat in its 1960 catalog with a shallow 4 x 14 Downbeat snare, later paired it with the Supra-Phonic 400, and kept it in the line through the 1971 catalog. The shells are thin 3-ply mahogany and poplar, and the 1960s ones wear keystone badges. Ringo ordered his with a Jazz Festival snare instead of the stock one, so a Downbeat listed with a different Ludwig snare can still be a fair match if the dates line up. What separates a good kit from three stray drums is agreement between the bass, tom and floor tom on badge style, serial range and finish, so check that first, then check that the shells are round and the bass drum has no extra holes.

Keystone badges without a serial number fit about 1960 to late 1963. Serial-numbered keystone badges follow (about 12,000 in February 1964, about 133,000 by the start of 1965, about 665,000 by 1969), and Ludwig switched to the blue and olive badge in 1969 at around serial 750,000. Many shells carry an ink date stamp inside, in red through the early 1960s and red or black from 1963, but it wipes off easily. Vintage Drum Guide's shell table has white painted interiors on most 1961–1967 shells and clear interiors from 1968.
Tom mounts got swapped over the years, so many bass drums have extra or filled holes. Ringo's own 1964 Downbeat had its Ludwig mount replaced with a Rogers one and the old holes plugged. Kits also get split and rebuilt from single drums, and rewrapped shells hide whatever was under the original pearl.
Buying guide
We'd buy the 1965 Sky Blue Pearl kit at $2,190 delivered from a 100% seller, inside the $1,850–2,800 delivered band. There are at least 4 vintage Downbeats for sale, so that band is a thin read. The UK auction of a Black Oyster Pearl 20/14/12, Ringo's finish and layout and titled no rewrap, is the one collectors will chase, and we'd stop at about $2,800 delivered, the top of the band, since the $300 shipping is already part of that. A true Downbeat is 20/12/14, so ask for sizes when a title leaves them out, and ask for photos of all three badges, inside each shell and the top of the bass drum, because swapped tom mounts and married drums are common. The $3,395 White Marine Pearl kit has 13- and 16-inch toms, the Super Classic sizes, so ask which drums came with the 20-inch bass before paying over the band.
$1,550.00est. delivered
The lowest delivered Downbeat here at $1,550, though $450 of that is freight. The title gives no year, sizes or finish, and the photo looks like it includes a snare, so ask what's in the sale and for the three badges before you offer.

A 1965 kit in Sky Blue Pearl from a 100% seller, inside the band at $2,190 delivered. The title skips the sizes, so confirm it's the 20/12/14 Downbeat layout and ask for photos inside each shell.

Black Oyster Pearl in the 20/14/12 Downbeat sizes, the finish and layout Ringo played, titled no rewrap. It's an auction from the UK with no bids yet, so we'd stop at about $2,800 delivered and ask for badge serials and inside-shell photos first.
