Ludwig · Super Classic · 1960–1975
The Super Classic was the 22-inch outfit in Ludwig's 1960 catalog, sold to the discriminating drummer with a 22 x 14 bass drum, a 13 x 9 tom, a 16 x 16 floor tom and the new all-metal Super-Ludwig snare that soon became the Supra-Phonic 400. When the Beatles moved up to bigger venues in 1964, Ludwig sent Ringo Starr larger drums to try, and he chose a Super Classic in Black Oyster Pearl. It was his main kit from May 1964 to September 1968, from Matchbox through Revolution, and a second one played Shea Stadium. Charlie Watts played a Sky Blue Pearl Super Classic with the Rolling Stones in the mid-1960s. The outfit stayed in the catalog through 1975, by then with a 20-inch bass drum option. The 1960s shells are 3-ply mahogany and poplar, many with white painted interiors, and Ludwig moved to 6-ply around 1976. The badge and interior tell you the era, and the bass drum tells you how the kit was used, since swapped tom mounts leave holes. Buy the kit whose three badges, finish and mount holes all agree.
Inside the shellSuper Classic
Keystone badges without a serial number fit about 1960 to late 1963, serial-numbered keystone badges run through 1969, and the blue and olive badge took over in 1969 at around serial 750,000. Ringo Starr's 1965 Super Classic shows how a true set reads, with badges numbered 151480 to 155364 and black ink date stamps of JUL 16 1965 inside the toms and bass drum. Vintage Drum Guide's shell table has white painted interiors on most 1961–1967 shells, clear interiors from 1968, and a switch to 6-ply shells around 1976–77.
The bass drum often carries extra holes from later tom and cymbal mounts. Single drums get married into sets, and older pearl wraps can be replaced or patched.
Buying guide
We'd buy the 60s Champagne Sparkle kit with keystone badges at $2,577 delivered, a 22/16/13 set in the Super Classic sizes from a 100% seller, near the low end of the $2,525–6,775 delivered band. There are at least 10 for sale, and that band is wide because the asks run from $1,887 for a set not titled Super Classic to $25,000 for a Ringo-style Black Oyster kit. On any of them, ask for photos of all three badges, inside each shell, the bearing edges with the heads off and the top of the bass drum with the tom off, since matching badges and interiors and no extra mount holes are what make a real set. Kits ship in two or three big boxes, so get a freight quote when shipping isn't stated. Skip the $1,000 White Marine Pearl kit from a zero-feedback account that copies a drum shop's title, and the $25,000 set unless the seller can document its history.

The lowest delivered complete kit here at $1,887, a 1960s White Marine Pearl set with a 22-inch bass, 16-inch floor tom and 13-inch tom. It isn't titled Super Classic, but those are the outfit's sizes, so ask for badge photos on all three drums to check they match.
