Rogers Holiday Kit
Holiday was the name Rogers gave its professional drums after Henry Grossman of Grossman Music bought the company in the 1950s and moved it to Ohio. The 1957 Holiday Outfit paired a 14 x 22 bass drum with a 9 x 13 tom and a 5 x 14 snare, in pearls like White Marine, Black Diamond and Sparkling Mardi Gras. Through the 1960s the same Holiday drums sat under the top outfits in the catalog, including Buddy Rich's Headliner and Celebrity sets, usually as a 20 or 22 bass, a 12 or 13 tom and a 14 or 16 floor tom. Design engineer Joe Thompson's Swiv-O-Matic hardware arrived around 1960, and its ball-and-socket tom holder was good enough that Ringo Starr and John Bonham used one with their Ludwigs. By the 1970 catalog the drums were called PowerTone, so the Holiday name marks an Ohio-made kit. Collectors date these by the script logo badge and the hardware. Buy a set whose badges all match, whose bass drum has no extra holes, and whose Swiv-O-Matic holder and spurs are still with it.

How to date one
There's no settled serial-number guide for Rogers, so date a Holiday by its parts. Vintage Drum Guide's badge chronology puts the large pirate-R and backward-leaning script logos at about 1959–1960 and the regular Ohio script at 1961–1968/69. The 1957 catalog outfit used an all-position tom holder, and Swiv-O-Matic holders appear in the 1960 catalog. By the 1970 catalog the same drums were listed as PowerTone.
What to check before you buy
Swiv-O-Matic holders, spurs and floor tom legs get separated from kits over the decades, and many bass drums carry extra holes from later mounts. Re-covered shells and married drums from different years are the other common problems on a kit this old.
01Badge: Look at the script logo badge on every drum in the photos. The badges should all be the same style, since a mix points to drums from different years.
02Tom holder: Check the photos for the Swiv-O-Matic tom holder on the bass drum. It should be a Rogers ball-and-socket unit in its original holes, with nothing extra drilled around it.
03Bass drum holes: Look over the bass drum shell in the photos for filled or extra holes. A clean shell has only the holes for its lugs, spurs and one tom holder.
04Wrap: Ask the seller for a close photo of each wrap seam. Matching color and aging on every drum, with no glue smears or stray holes at the seam, points to the original covering.
05Shells: On arrival, take the heads off and look inside each drum. The plies should be tight, the reinforcing rings glued down and the bearing edges smooth with no chips.
06Matching set: Ask whether the drums were bought together. Sizes from one catalog outfit with the same lugs and finish make a better buy than a set assembled later.
07Packing: Ask the seller to box each drum separately with the heads on and hardware off, or pick it up locally. Kits are bulky, and loose Swiv-O-Matic parts get bent or lost in transit.

We'd look hardest at the blue sparkle kit titled Dayton era at $2,000, because its 20, 12, 13 and 16-inch drums match a 1960s Holiday outfit and the seller has 100% feedback. We found only two Holiday kits for sale, so treat the prices as two asks, not a market read. The $2,000 kit states no shipping, and a kit ships as two or three big boxes, so get a freight quote or arrange pickup before you offer. On either kit, ask for a photo of every badge, the Swiv-O-Matic tom holder in its original holes and the bass drum shell for extra holes, since holders and spurs are the parts that go missing. The other blue 4-piece is $1,050 delivered with $350 freight, but eBay didn't show the seller's feedback and the title gives no sizes, so check both before offering.
